A Dietitian’s 4 Step Guide to Diabetes Empowerment

As a registered dietitian, the topic of diabetes accounts for a lot of the questions and concerns I hear regularly. There’s just so much information – and misinformation- about diabetes out there: what it means, how to manage it, what to eat, what NOT to eat, etc.

While diabetes is a serious health condition, there are some practical steps that you can take now to both prevent AND manage diabetes and its precursor, prediabetesIf you’re proactive about making some key lifestyle changes, you can even get to a point where you’re effectively in remission! And the best part is these same steps will also promote overall health and lower your risk for a number of other health conditions.

It all comes down to successfully managing four key factors, and you CAN do it!

Before we start, it’s important to understand some stats.

Diabetes by the numbers:

  • 84 million American adults have pre-diabetes (that’s more than 1 in 3)

  • 30 million Americans have diabetes, about 1 in 10

  • About 1.5 million new cases are diagnosed every year

I share these numbers not to scare you, but rather to point out that given the high rates, chances are you or someone close to you has pre-diabetes or diabetes. If you’ve been newly diagnosed, it is natural to feel scared or confused.

In honor of National Diabetes Month, there’s no better time to address how you can successfully manage this increasingly common disease and live a healthy life.

Managing diabetes can be done and I want to share some helpful information that you can put into action TODAY!

While our 4 steps are geared specifically towards those battling diabetes, these tips can (and should!) be embraced by everyone looking to improve their health!
